About Artistic Athletes

Artistic Athletes is a program led by Dr. Jessica Galvez, a member of the American Physical Therapy Association Performing Arts Special Interest Group. Dr. Galvez has a background in ballet, tap, jazz, and other dance styles, and 10 years of experience in competitive dance.

This extensive program will allow performers of all ages to participate in physical therapy exercises tailored to their craft and specifically aimed to help them return to their previous performance levels, whether it be for class, rehearsal or competition, with decreased risk of injury and a longer career.

All athletes will receive a Selective Functional Movement Assessment and dancers will additionally undergo a functional dance assessment at appropriate points in rehab to make sure our education, manual therapy, and exercise intervention are guiding each athlete towards accomplishing their maximum potential.

Artistic Athletes may be a good fit for you if you’re someone who sustains recurrent sprains and strains, experiences low back pain that interferes with your performance, you’re in post-op recovery, or you’re just searching for a way to fine-tune your strength, flexibility, stamina, and endurance levels.

Who can this program help?

Artistic Athletes can help dancers and performers of all types, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Ballet/Pointe
  • Tap
  • Jazz
  • Contemporary
  • Hip-hop
  • Theater
  • Ballroom
  • Cheerleading
  • Gymnastics

Atlas Physical Therapy also offers “Ready for Pointe” consults for adolescents and young adults ages 12 and up.

Every client will undergo an initial physical therapy evaluation including elements of the Functional Dance Assessment and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment to find areas of improvement.

Our priority is engaging with our clients during treatment sessions to understand their personal short and long-term goals. Sessions will be specialized to the athlete’s target areas, determined by our initial evaluation, and may include hands-on techniques such as:

  • – Joint Mobilizations and Manipulations
  • – Kinesiotape or McConnell Taping techniques
  • – Cupping, therapy floss, and other myofascial release techniques
  • – Ultrasound
  • – Trigger point dry needling after consultation with our licensed clinicians (cash service)
  • Neuromuscular re-education techniques including Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (more commonly for post-operative patients)

We will also provide follow-up consultation with parents, teachers, coaches, trainers as often as needed during and after your course of care to ensure that post-operative or non-operative protocols for injury recovery are in place.
